Description

SVK Prince of Wales (Charles) at his first show, Stormtime Monthly Show - April

Story:

I slipped on Charles' lead and brushed through his (short) hair one last time. The young puppy wagged his tail and shifted his feet around on the table, quietly whining with excitement. "Just one second, Charlie." I said, smiling. Charlie was behaving wonderfully for a (hardly) 6 month old puppy and I was incredibly excited to be showing him at his first show.

The breeze lightly blew Charles newly washed & dried hair. For the most part, it laid flat and neat, aside from some of the short puppy hair that refused to uncurl. I grabbed some string cheese out of the cooler, took a quick sip of water, then loosened the noose around Charles' neck and helped him hop off the table. It didn't take long for him to start bouncing all around, checking every blade of grass. I knew keeping him in control in the ring would not be an easy feat.

We got up to the ring just as the class before us was called in. I grabbed my comb and brushed through him one last time, holding his muzzle to keep him standing until it was our turn. The dogs from the class before us were handed their ribbons and our number was called. I coddled Charles' head in my hands and gave him a quick kiss before releasing my grip and heading into the ring. No matter how big of a fool he made of me, he was a great addition to Braemoor and was a dog I loved not only for show reasons, but because he was a big goof and kept us all in positive thoughts.

Luckily, we were the only ones in our class and it wouldn't take long for the judge to go over Charles. I was able to keep him in control (for the most part) the first time around the ring. My arm muscles certainly got a workout, but nonetheless, Charles couldn't have looked too bad. I brought him up to the area that he would be examined and tried to hold him still. To my relief, the judge laughed it off when Charles wiggled and tried to jump around. Unfortunatley, it seemed to only egg him on. I tightened the lead around his neck as we headed down the diagnol...As we turned to make it back, he started to loose patience and wanted to gallop towards the judge. "Ah-ah," I said, gently tugging his lead as I began to slow down to stack. As we got back, I pulled his lead up as he positioned his legs. To my surprise, he didn't seem as though he wanted to jump around. I loosened his lead and was able to step back.
Well, they who said that a Setter can't be manipulative? After a split second of perfect harmony and picture perfection, it became clear to me that Charles was focusing on a bird that had landed on the ring gate. A puppy-ish, playful, "Woof!" erupted as he lunged towards the bird as it began flapping away....'Oops.' was all I could think to myself as he pulled my body off balance, as I plummeted to the ground. The crowd erupted in laughter and cheers as my face reddened and I stood up to regain my composure. Charles turned around and looked at me with a puppy like grin, as if to say, "You made me look good for that long. You deserved that."

Artist's Comments

Hope he looks a few days over 6 mos. Either way, not too bad for my first Setter drawing! Maybe I'll upload the sketch to scraps for you all to see. I'm pretty happy with how the overall finished product looks. The story kind got a little longer than planned. I was hoping for between 200-300 words and I got well over 500. xD
